Obed Naig, age 97 of Emmetsburg, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Lakeside Senior Care in Emmetsburg. Obed Bert Naig, the son of Berger B and Gladys (Oneson) Naig, was born on March 3, 1924 at his parent’s home near Cylinder, Iowa. Upon losing his father at the age of 7, his mother moved him and his siblings to the family farm where they resided with his great Uncles Nels and Ole Twaiten. He graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1943. On August 30, 1953, Obed and Dawn Parish were united in marriage at First Congregational Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Obed and Dawn raised their three children on the family farm where they worked the land as well as raised a variety of livestock. In the 1980’s, Obed and Dawn retired from farming and moved into Emmetsburg, but Obed always kept busy helping family with farming and construction projects well into his 80’s. The family farm became a Century Farm in 1993. Obed was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. He served as a township trustee for 30 plus years and served on the boards for the Cylinder Elevator, Lakeside Lutheran Home, and the Palo Alto County Historical Society. Obed also measured set aside land for ASCS. Obed loved his grandchildren and spent many hours attending their school events. Obed had a passion for fishing; especially at Five Island Lake, Leech Lake, and Lake of the Woods. Obed also enjoyed his multiple coffee hours with many friends at McNally’s, Joyce’s Food Pride, and Kirby’s Cafe. Obed is survived by his daughters, Marit (Frank) Veltri of Emmetsburg and Angela Hetrick of Cylinder; son, Bert (Julie) Naig of Cylinder; six grandchildren, Carlo (Christa) Veltri, Joe (Anna) Veltri, Julia (Maury) Noonan, Alicia (Dedric) Day, Amy (Andy) Ritchie and Karen (Spenser) Frank; twelve great grandchildren, Ally, Alana, Ryan, Micah, Matthew, Ephram, Callan, Warren, Mary, Holden, Julia and Ann; sister, Virginia (Harlan) Holstad of Hampton and sister-in-law, Autumn “Bing” (Virgil) Plume. Obed is also survived by a large extended family and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 63 years, Dawn Naig; son-in-law, Butch Hetrick; and a brother along with his wife, Rev. Harold (Jeanette) Naig.
