Nick Prillaman, Jr., 84, of Martinsville, passed away on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville Henry County. He was born April 27, 1927 in Goldsboro, NC to the late Nick Prillaman, Sr. and Ruth Moore Prillaman. Mr. Prillaman is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy Long Prillaman of Martinsville, formerly of Middletown, VA. A graduate of Bassett High School, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from VPI in 1949. Nick served in the U.S. Navy during WW II on the destroyer, Frank Knox, and was commissioned a Lieutenant J.G. in the Naval Reserve in 1954. After graduating from VPI, Nick joined The Prillaman Company; a business started by his father in 1936, and later became president of the corporation. He was joined by his brother, Hal, and together, they also built the Prillaman Chemical Corp. and The Prillaman Brothers, Inc. and acquired several associated corporations dealing with industrial finishes, coatings, and recycling including American Alchemy, Asher-Moore and Daly-Herring. Nick retired in 1984 when the majority of the enterprises were sold. Mr. Prillaman was a member of The First United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the board, a lay leader, and a teacher of the Sheppe Bible Class. He also served in the Good News Mission Jail Ministry, and was president of the Full Gospel Businessmen’s Fellowship. His civic leadership included serving as president of the Martinsville Jaycees and the Martinsville Kiwanis Club, and on the board of the Salvation Army. He also participated in the Blue Ridge Regional Library Literacy Program, enjoyed golf with the Grasshoppers group, and was a member of the Henry Hotel coffee klatch. The Nancy Long and Nick Prillaman, Jr. Classroom and Laboratory at Martinsville’s Patrick Henry Community College was established by a gift to the college from the Prillamans in support of the chemistry program. Mr. Prillaman also was a Life Member of the VA Tech College of Engineering’s Alumni Committee of 100, a charter member and benefactor of the university’s Ut Prosim Society for recognition of philanthropy, and a sponsor of The Nick Prillaman Professorship in Civil and Environmental Engineering. One of six children, Mr. Prillaman is survived by brothers William W. Prillaman of Naples, FL, Hal G. Prillaman of Martinsville, and Jerry L. Prillaman of Obsonville, France, and predeceased by sisters Connie F. Prillaman and Ruth P. Hundley. He is also survived by two children, Hunter Long Prillaman of Potomac, MD, and Stephanie P. Roberson of Martinsville, and three grandchildren, Austin Riggs Roberson, Nathan Charles Prillaman, and Ruth Taylor Prillaman.
