Nevin Sterling Yeakel, 90, of Bethlehem, passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, September 15, 2018, surrounded by the love of his family. He was the loving husband of Audrey (Donaghy) Yeakel, with whom he shared over 68 years of marriage.
Born in Bethlehem, Nevin was the son of the late Russell and Esther Yeakel. After graduating from Bethlehem Technical High School, he served his country in the US Navy during WWII. Upon returning home, he was employed by Philadelphia Bethlehem and New England Railroad for 37 years, retiring as Supervisor of Transportation in 1985.
Nevin enjoyed being active in the Boy Scouts. His years of service included organizing Boy Scout Troop #7 at his church, along with serving as Scoutmaster and Assistant District Commissioner for the Bethlehem Council. He was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award in recognition for his dedication to Scouting.
Nevin was also active in his community as a volunteer coach and President of East End Little League. He was also a life time member of the Pennsylvania Earth Science Association, and an active member of St. Stephen’s Evangelical Lutheran Church as Council President, Christian Education Chairman, and Church Curator.
Over the past 40 years, Nevin, a local historian, was often asked to present at various social and community groups. This led to his writing a book entitled “Bethlehem Steel Railroading” depicting the history of the railroad service to Bethlehem Steel.
Survivors: Nevin is survived by his wife, Audrey; children, Glenn and wife Susanne of West Hartford CT, Paul of Bethlehem, and Marcia and husband Jeffrey Burk of Bethlehem; brother Frederick of Bethlehem. Nevin and Audrey were blessed with six grandchildren; Kyle, Ryan, Christopher, Sara, Alexander and Megan, along with five great-grandchildren; Shane, Cameron, Ethan, Caleb and Maximus. Nevin was predeceased by his brother, James Yeakel.
