Mrs. Nell Boswell Justiss, age 86, died January 10, 2013 at Christian City. She was born June 8, 1926 to the late George and Hattie Gray Boswell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ben and Aleck Boswell and three sisters, Ruby, Ellen and Jody. On October 26, 1947, she married William R. Justiss.
He also preceded her in death in 1992. Mrs. Justiss, like many women of her day, worked in the garment manufacturing industry in Newnan. While working at Playtex, she felt compelled to finish her education which had been interrupted. In 1965, she completed her course work and obtained her GED and chose nursing as a career course. Being strongly disciplined, she and her daughter both enrolled at Carroll Tech in the first LPN nursing class in conjunction with Coweta General Hospital in 1968 and both graduated in 1969. She worked as an In-service Director at Beaulieu Nursing Home, an emergency room nurse at Coweta General and also in the emergency room at South Fulton Hospital. She also continued her education at LaGrange College and received her Registered Nurse certification in 1976.
Nell possessed a strong servant spirit for helping people in need, but possessing a very independent nature, also wanted to be able to determine her own destiny. Consequently, with the help of her brothers, who were contractors, she began her own business in 1968. Thus, began, Happy Haven Retirement Home on Pine Road in Newnan. Later she expanded her business by adding a facility for patients with Alzheimer’s that became Great Oaks. She loved her patients and staff and devoted herself to providing the best quality of life possible for them. In the year 2000 it was necessary for her to close her life’s work as the demands were more than she could continue to fulfill. It was ironic that the person who had put so much of herself into caring for the patients of Alzheimer’s would herself fall victim to the disease.
Surviving are her children, Linda Justiss Monk and her husband Roy of Tyrone; Danny Justiss and his wife Lisha of Newnan. Her brothers are Bobby (and Marleen) Boswell; Harry (and Jean) Boswell, Leroy (and Gloria) Boswell. Her surviving sister is Nancy McAlister. Her grandchildren are Stephen Ayers, Kevin (and Fifi) Ayers, Jennifer (and David) Humphries, Joey (and Lindsay) Justiss. Her five great-grandchildren are Addison Ayers, Logan Ayers, Kloie Humphries, Dalten Humphries and Walker Justiss.
