Ned R. Chappell, age 73, of Salem, died at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 14, 2016 at the Crandall Medical Center in Sebring. He was born August 9, 1942 in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of the late Robert C. and Hilda Lou (Zimmerman) Chappell.

He was a 1960 graduate of Salem High School, where he was captain of the Salem Football Team which ranked 8th in the State that year. He was also the first Salem person to play in the North South Football game in Canton, Ohio and also played on the Penn Ohio Football Team in Ohio. He received a football scholarship to the University of Maryland and attended there for 2 years, before entering the U.S. Marine Corps from 1962-1966. Upon his discharge from the Marine Corps he continued his education at the University of Maryland, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1969. In 1970 he entered a partnership with his father and brother as owner of Chappell and Zimmerman, a family business established in 1946.

Ned was a church member of the First United Methodist Church where he was very active serving on many committees. He established the Elevator Fund Committee and was instrumental in getting the elevator installed in the church. He also was a member of the Salem Elks Lodge #305, National Rifleman’s Association, Life member of the V.F.W. of Salem, United Commercial Traveler’s, Salem Athletic Hall of Fame – as a team and individual, Salem Historical Society, and was former member of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, the ‘M’ Club (Letterman Club) of the University of Maryland, Salem Chamber of Commerce, Salem Golf Club, Salem Hills Golf Club, UCT, Salem Hunt Club, and he was a coach for The Little Quaker’s Football for many years. Also served as Treasurer of the 5 County Builder’s Assoc., and was a Past President of the Salem Wrestling Club.

Survivors include his wife, Sally (Snowball) Chappell, whom he married July 5, 1964. Two sons, Shawn Michael Chappell of Salem, and Christian Mark (Elizabeth) Chappell of Salem; three grandchildren, Shawn Chappell Jr., Christian Chappell, and Chloe Chappell; a sister, Abi Cotter of Salem; and two brothers, Todd D. Chappell of Fairfax, Virginia, and Judd C. Chappell of Salem.
