Muncie – Retired Muncie schoolteacher Nancy Gail Lee (formerly Nancy Scroggins and Nancy Locey), passed away peacefully the morning of March 11, 2013, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Nancy was born in Muncie, the daughter of Ralph and Gail Locey, who together ran a well-known auto body shop on the south side of Muncie for many years. Nancy attended Lincoln Elementary School, Wilson Middle School, and Muncie Central High School. She graduated from Muncie Central in 1956, where she was a fiercely proud member of the Bearcat Cheer Block and convinced to her last day that Milan cheated.
Nancy had a passion for education and truly believed it unlocked doors for children of all backgrounds. Nancy began her teaching career at Cowan Elementary School and then moved to the Muncie Community School Corporation, where she taught at West View Elementary School through the1960s and 1970s. After taking a few years away from work to raise her children, she returned to the classroom, teaching at Garfield Elementary School and Sutton Elementary School until her retirement in 2006, after 37 years of teaching. Nancy was well-known for her lively and artistic bulletin boards and her genuine love of every child that passed through her classroom. It is likely that Nancy touched more than 1,000 children during her long teaching career, helping them learn to read, write, believe in themselves, and dream big.
Nancy is survived by her two sons, Eric Scroggins (wife -Jen) and Kevin Scroggins (wife Jessica), whom she loved dearly. Her grandchildren, Ethan and Finn (sons of Eric and Jen) and Kendra (daughter of Kevin and Jess), gave her tremendous joy. She is also survived by her brother, Wayne Locey, her sister, Anita Hicks, and many nieces and nephews. Nancy and her family are grateful for the many friends, some even from Nancy’s childhood, who loved and helped care for her until the time of her passing.
