Nancy C. Runkel, 81, of Springfield and formerly of Jacksonville, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.
She was born Nov. 15, 1930, in Chicago, the daughter of Louis and Gertrude Sunde Due. She married Charles E. Runkel on July 18, 1953, in Jacksonville and he preceded her in death on Mar. 27, 2010.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter, Gerhardt (Pamela) Runkel of Boca Raton, FL, Chris (Stephen) Shafer of Griggsville, and Eric (Rhonda Wood) Runkel of Springfield; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Don Due of Chicago. She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Due.
Mrs. Runkel was a 1949 graduate of Jacksonville High School, and then attended Hardin-Brown Business College. She and her mother owned and operated Newell’s Clothing Store on the square in Jacksonville for over 25 years. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, and was an active member of the Jacksonville Area Chamber of Commerce. She was also a member of Hospitaller Commandery #31 Ladies Auxiliary, the Jacksonville Symphony Chorale, and was a volunteer at the State Police Museum in Springfield. Nancy was an avid bowler, loved music and was proud of her Norwegian heritage. She and Charles had traveled extensively throughout the U.S.
