(Myrtle) LaVerne Black, 81, of Belton, passed away Monday, July 30, 2012 at her home.
LaVerne was born March 22, 1931 in Briggs, Texas to Jud and Amelia Smith who predeceased her along with her brothers Edwin and Robert. She was a graduate of Briggs High School and Southwest State Teachers College (aka Texas State University). After graduation from college she married her high school sweetheart, Glen Black, January 3, 1953 in Harlingen.
She began work with Central Power and Light Co. and then began her teaching career in Home Economics and Elementary Schools in Texas, Iowa, and Virginia. She later worked for the Smithsonian Mail Order before retiring to be a homemaker. Having grown up as a farm girl she loved to garden and work in the yard. Above all, she loved her Lord, teaching youth Sunday School and in the last 25 years teaching a Senior Adult Ladies Bible class.
She is survived by her husband of 59 and one-half years, two sons Gregory Black and wife Michele of Edwardsburg, Michigan and Michael Black and wife Jeanne of Bristol, Tennessee, three grandsons, one granddaughter and two great grandchildren.
