Myron C. “Mike” Madsen, 83, of Peoria and formerly of Jacksonville, passed away Sunday, January 20, 2013, at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria. He was born July 17, 1929, in Grand Island, NE, the son of Mads S. and Alta M. Garner Madsen.

Mike spent his early life in Axtell, NE, before graduating from Grand Island Senior High School. He attended Iowa State University and earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. On Oct. 4, 1952, he married Barbara Patterson in Davenport, IA. They resided in Texas, where he was employed by Phillips Chemical Company. He then served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps prior to moving to Jacksonville. From 1953 until his retirement he was employed with National Starch and was plant manager in Meredosia. He served the Meredosia community through years of volunteering with the Boy Scouts, the Meredosia Historical Society, and his support of the renovation of the train station and the development of the River Museum.

Mike’s ever open arms extended not only to the family and communities he loved, but to the lives of eight foreign exchange students he and Barbara hosted in their home, as well as the many dogs he fostered and loved. Mike was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church in Dunlap.

Mike is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara; son Steve (Laura) Madsen of Fort Worth, TX; two daughters, Becky (Craig) Gillam of West Dundee and Kris (Gregg) McClelland of Dunlap; and ten grandchildren, Lindsay and Jaime Tollefson, and Ashley, Tara, Benjamin and Timothy McClelland, all of Dunlap, Haley and Gus Gillam of West Dundee, Jillian Madsen (Travis) Becquet of Corpus Christi, TX, and Kirsten Madsen of Fort Worth, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Don and Duane.
