A gift was given to the world on February 17, 1939 and was called from 82 years of labor to reward on Monday, January 3, 2022, at 6:30pm. This gift was Gwendolyn Irene Siler, affectionately known as “Piggy”. Piggy was born to the late Louise Siler Marsh (Aug. 21, 1981) and Garland Womble (Dec. 9, 1956). Gwendolyn grew up through out several areas of Siler City.(including Fox Town), with her mother, until moving with her grandfather, the late Rev. Pastor Doc Daniel “D.D.” Siler (Oct. 9, 1975), on Nth 5th Avenue in the 7th grade. Piggy prided assisting her grandfather with the building of the home place, as well as the house next door he built for her mother, and many other houses he built throughout Siler City. She felt this was the catalyst of her believing she could learn to do anything.
Piggy started school at the age of six in 1945. Upon graduating high school, at 18 Piggy moved to Atlantic City, Ns to work as a hotel housekeeper. She was proud of her $35/week plus tips job stating, “That was a lot of money!”, that allowed her to help her family, live life, and save money. It is here where she gleaned her cleaning skills & honed her cooking expertise by being THE cook for her & her roommates Janice Headen and Janice Peoples as they lived on Baltic Avenue. After living and working in NJ a short time, Piggy deferred plans of attending school to return to Siler City to care for her sick mother. She acquired a job caring for the home and children of Sis and Jerry Wood and stayed with them from 1957 – August 2009 (52 years). In between those years she also worked at C&A and Siler City Chicken Plant where she created new, lasting friendships.
On January 23, 1961, Piggy gave birth to her pride and joy, Boris Lynn Siler. At the passing of her sister Debra, Piggy adopted her 2nd pride and joy, her niece Tonya Marsh Reeves, and made sure her children lacked nothing, especially love. Piggy shared this love and her wisdom with not just her family, but with everyone. She had an insight into life that was always beyond her years. She was known for her giving spirit, sage advice, and delicious cooking She is already missed greatly.
Piggy transitioned at Clapp’s Nursing Center in Pleasant Garden, NC, where she resided the past five years. She created a bond with the workers that was no different than anyone she met. She became known as “Grandma” and “Our Baby” to the staff who cared for her as their own. Prior to her sickness that led to her move to Clapp’s, Piggy was active in her church, First Missionary Baptist Church. She ushered and sang in both the Fellowship and Senior choirs for years, and assisted with other auxiliaries as she was asked. She took great pride in her church as it is not only the church her grandfather pastored for over twenty years, but one he literally helped build with his hands, and she got to assist.
Piggy was preceded in death by: her son Boris and daughter-in-law Phyllis; four sisters and six brothers, Debra Marsh, Janice “Pouchie Dark, Betty Dark, Sarah Twitty, Douglas “Doodly” Siler, Richard “Ricky” Siler, Michael Marsh, Ralph Dark, and Jimmy Dark.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter, Tonya Reeves, (Bret Reeves – Clarksville, TN); three grandchildren, Tatianna Scales, Briana Reeves, and Corey Reeves (Clarksville, TN; five grandchildren, Audrianna, Alexandria, and Asaph (Tatianna), Londyn and Jurnee (Briana); two sisters, Mattie “Dobbie” Marsh (Greensboro, NC), Jacqueline “Jackie” Marsh (Siler City, NC); two brothers, Danny “Little Booky” Marsh, (Greensboro, NC), James “Jimbo’ Marsh, (Siler City, NC); and a host of niece WS, Cousins and friends.
