Mrs. Vivian Winston Simmons was born October 22, 1949 in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Mr. and Mrs. William and Minnie Winston. Vivian departed this life on September 5, 2016.
For forty-seven years, Vivian was united in holy matrimony to her surviving husband Mr. John “JD” Simmons. Vivian was a graduate of Atlanta’s own Booker T. Washington High School and studied at Atlanta Area Technical Col-lege.
As a young lady, Vivian met JD in the Summer Hill section of Atlanta and on December 16, 1969 they married. Vivian elected to be a stay-home wife and mother for 13 years to raise her family. She had a zest for life that was appar-ent to all those around her. She was actively involved with her community and in the local schools. She coached the Columbia High School varsity ma-jorette squad for five years thrilling thousands of students, faculty and fans during halftime shows at Eagle’s football games. Eventually she decided to pursue her own career. Vivian took a position working at Black Records where she began her career as a record promoter. Vivian’s witty personality and straightforward demeanor made her the life of any party. She quickly made a name for herself as a part of the Atlanta night scene and went on to become a popular radio personality on Atlanta’s V103 radio station. She was widely known around metropolitan Atlanta by her alias “D.J. Chocolate” while working as a member of the Mitch Faulkner morning show. She had great love for her family and friends—she provided special care for her moth-er and her grandchildren during their time of need.
Vivian leaves to cherish her memory; her loving husband John ”JD” Simmons, mother-in law Lottie L. Simmons, brother William Clyde (Meka) Winston, son Tony (Vicky) Simmons and daughter Monica Simmons, nephew Andre, nieces Carolyn and Tonya, cousin Hilda, grandchildren Darius, Hannah, Johnathan, Joshua, Josiah and Jaylen and a host of loving family and friends.
