Our loving and beloved mother, Newlin Ashmore Nevis, departed this world on October 4, 2016, at the age of 90. Born in Gainesville, Florida, to John Henry Ashmore and Nursie Whaley Ashmore as the youngest of their eleven children, “NuNu” grew up in Smith Creek and Crawfordville; she went to a one-classroom schoolhouse with her brother Wayne as her first teacher. She later attended Florida State College for Women (now FSU) before graduating with a B.S. in Nursing from Duke University. Newlin took her first job at Stanford Hospital in San Francisco, where she met her future husband Arnold. She worked briefly at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital before they married in Tallahassee in 1952 and moved to Boston where she first worked at Massachusetts General Hospital and then left work to give birth to the first two of five sons. Later the family relocated to Galveston and Los Angeles, where they sadly lost their eldest son to Leukemia. When the family moved back to Gainesville, Newlin remained in her house over fifty years, raising the four boys, becoming active in the PTA, League of Women’s Voters, UF Medical Guild, and Westminster Presbyterian Church. In the late 1970’s Newlin returned to work first at Shands Hospital, then as a school nurse for the Alachua County School Board, and finally for Children’s Medical Services (State of Florida). In retirement she volunteered for the Guardian ad Litem program and for UF Shands Hospital Auxiliary, in which she served several terms as treasurer and vice president and staffed the Auxiliary’s post in the Shands waiting room for almost thirty years. Newlin was proud of her “cracker” background as a fifth generation Floridian, but she was also keen to see the world and traveled to more than thirty countries, six continents, and most states, resulting a prized collection of hundreds of souvenir spoons. In her seventies, Newlin tried white-water rafting in the Andes and snowmobiling in the Rockies. She played bridge with her friends into her eighties. Newlin was preceded in death by her husband Arnold H. Nevis and son John Edward Nevis, and survived by four sons: Allan (Cathie) Nevis, Joel (Jusquifabio) Nevis y Flores, Andrew (Judy) Nevis, and Eric Enwood (Jodie) Nevis. Grandchildren: Nikki (Joe) Nozza, Denise (Mike) Keller, Kalyn Nevis, Bryan Nevis, Matison Nevis, Spencer Nevis, and Trenton Nevis. Great Grandchildren: Zach Keller and Zoe Keller. Sister: Sheryl Ferrell.
