There’s a great story behind the birth of Christine Sanders, she was born premature weighing only 4lbs. In 1935 the infant mortality rate was high and most premature babies born at home didn’t survive. However, Christine was a fighter. Upon arrival Christine would not take her first breath as most babies do. The midwife spanked Christine three times before she let out a very short quite whimper. Christine was not expected to make it through the night, but night after night she became stronger. Christine out lived her parents and all seven of her siblings. Comer Sanders Sr. (father) would refer to Christine as the “runt of the bunch”, but “the toughest of the group”. Her siblings where Comer Jr., William (Willie), Robert (Bobby), Hubbard, James, Eva, and Anna. Being the oldest female child she was the glue that held the family together. Her sisters Eva and Anna died at very young ages in there early 30’s of lupus. Christine was left as the only girl and soon began baring the responsibility of preparing the home going celebrations for her parents as well as siblings.

In 1951 the Sanders family relocated from Macon, Georgia to New York City. In 1952 Christine graduated from Yorkville High School, New York, New York. While in New York Christine met and married Rowland Selby and from that union they bore there only child Naomi Selby. Rowland Selby past away in 1980. Christine was a free spirit who enjoyed life to the fullest. She was not a religious person, but her spirituality could be seen through her actions. She believed in treating people, the way she would want to be treated, or better. She was a helpful neighbor, a devoted friend, and the keeper of everyone’s secrets. She did not gossip, she would listen but never repeat. Christine would give until she didn’t have anything left to give. She placed others needs before her own. Christine had a wonderful career as a dietitian with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Bronx, New York. She severed over 22 years with the VA. She retired in 1998 and 2000 moved from Bronx, New York to Marietta, Georgia to join her family.
