Betty Lou Horton Foxx, a loving and devoted wife, mother, daughter and sister was the eldest child of the late Coley and Joybell Horton of Staley, NC. She was born April 22, 1931 and departed this life on Thursday, February 4, 2021.
She attended Randolph County Schools and upon her graduation she fulfilled her desire to become a nurse by attending Kate Bitting School of Nursing in Winston-Salem, NC. Upon graduation, she became the first African-American Registered Nurse to be employed by Chatham Hospital in Siler City.
She was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Clyde T. Foxx of Siler City and to this union two daughters were born. While living in Detroit, MI she continued her career as an R.N. at Providence Hospital and then worked for the U.S. National Guard Armory as an occupational health nurse.
After living in Michigan for twenty years, Betty and her family moved to Kernersville, NC where she was employed by L. Richardson Hospital as an emergency room supervisor. While working full-time, Betty returned to school and completed her education receiving a B.S.N. from NCA&T State University. She was a member of Chi Ēta Phi Sorority, Inc “Nursing Sorority.” When her husband Clyde retired, the two moved back to his hometown Siler City. Betty took the final step in her career as she became the Director of Nursing at Chatham Hospital. After her retirement, Betty used her decades of experience to teach Certified Nursing Assistance at Chatham County Community College.
Betty and her husband were faithful members of First Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a Deaconess and served in the Missionary Department, Nurse’s Aid Ministry, Publicity Committee, Senior Choir and Gospel Choir. She also served her community as a healthcare volunteer, teaching women the art of self-care for health and as a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Betty was preceded in death by: her husband, Clyde T. Foxx; two brothers, Clyde and Roger Horton; and sister, Barbara Horton Butler.
She leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Judy K. Branch (John) of Raleigh and Janet C. Foxx of Greensboro; one sister, Cora Horton Waddell of Greensboro; two grandchildren, John W. Branch, IV (Bonnie) of Raleigh and David T. Branch of Kakamigahara, Japan; one great-granddaughter, Olive A. Branch and two great-grandsons, John W. Branch V and Jordan Branch, all of Raleigh; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
