Raleigh — Sherman L. Avery, age 68, after a brief illness, departed this life on Monday, October 5, 2020, at Wake Medical Hospital.

Mr. Avery is survived by his son, Lorenzo Turner. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Jewell Jenkins, Kenosha Turner and Na’eemah Turner: sisters, Dr. Mary Morgan (Thomas), Portia Brandon (Wesley), Anntionette Elleby (Christopher/deceased), Paltine Braxton (Charles); brother, Paul Avery (Heather) and a host of other relatives and friends.

Preceding Mr. Avery in death is his father, Paul Avery and brother, Bruce Chavis.

Sherman is a veteran of the Vietnam War, where he earned several medals in 2 branches of the military forces, US Army and US Marines. He grew up in nearby Garner, NC, the son of Paul Avery and Gertrude Avery. As a child, he learned to work in construction from his father, who was a general contractor. As he grew older, he began to find his specialty in plumbing.  He took pride in the fact that he always left his customers satisfied. Sherman retired from the business five years ago to pursue his other passion of going to the gun range with his brother Paul Avery.  After the death of his father, Sherman at the young age of 50, took over as the family matriarch and historian.

He served several years with distinction as a U.S. Marine in Vietnam, including a period in the U.S. Army. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Marines, never left him, as friends and family will attest.
