Mr. Hugh Douglas Young, Jr., of Brookwood Avenue, died peacefully after several months of failing health at The Village at Brookwood on September 14, 2022.
He was born in Yadkin, Rowan County, in 1925 to Hugh Douglas Young, Sr., and Mary Elva Snider Young, both of whom worked at the North Carolina Finishing Company. Hugh grew up in the mill village at Yadkin and received his Eagle Scout badge in the summer of 1942. He attended Catawba College on Salisbury, where he studied and taught physics and chemistry and met his lifelong sweetheart, Annie Laurie Taylor.
Hugh served in the Pacific theater with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He and Annie Laurie were married in the spring of 1947. In the summer of 1948, while Hugh worked in the burgeoning nuclear industry at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, their daughter Linda was born, followed by their daughter Susan in 1951.
Hugh had a long and fulfilling career as an engineer at the Western Electric Company in Burlington, North Carolina.
