Herman C. (“H.C.”) Messina Jr., OD, devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away August 23 at the age of 85 at his home in Slidell, La., after a short battle with cancer. He was born April 10, 1924 in New Orleans, only child of the late Herman Cecil Messina Sr. and the late Augustine Marie Messina. He attended Our Lady Star of the Sea elementary school and graduated from Samuel J. Peters High School. He served in the U.S. Army in Occupied Japan as an optician with the rank of Sergeant. Using the GI bill, he graduated in 1951 from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Sigma Optometric Honor Society and Beta Sigma Kappa International Honorary Fraternity. He was an optometric physician and practiced in New Orleans, Metairie and Slidell until February, 2009. He was a past president of the New Orleans Contact Lens Society.
