Elma heeded the call to serve in the military and enlisted in the United States Army from September 13, 1951 until May 22, 1953.

Elma was industrious in nature, and he soon gained employment, in 1953, at Hygrade Meat Packing Company, where he remained until the company closed its Indianapolis operations.

On August 27, 1955, Elma was united in Holy Matrimony to Izetta Hardy.  Their union of marital contentment and happiness spanned over 53 years, until her death in 2008. 

Elma embarked upon a thirty-four year career with The General Motors Corporation.  He retired on December 31, 2001 as a Material Handler and Utility Man.  He was also a member of the United Auto Workers Union, (U.A.W.), #23.  Bother well-liked and highly respected among his co-workers, he enjoyed the camaraderie of his peers.  In his               retirement years, he continued to meet up with his friends at The Lafayette Square Mall and at The Riverside Community Center.

Elma Neal departed this earthly life on August 7, 2019, at the age of eighty-eight years one month and twenty-three days.  He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Vanice, and siblings, Paris Hall, L.V. Holiman, Lawrence B. Neal, Jr., Willie Sam Neal, and Berlin Peoples.
