Mildred R. Froelich, 91 died peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, with her children present.

Mildred was born November 7, 1920 in Wyandotte, Michigan, to Edith and J. Stanley Roberts.

Her family moved to the east side of Cleveland when she was three. Mildred attended Collinwood High School. She then studied ‘cello with Harry Fuchs and Leonard Rose. She attended Mather College of Western Reserve University, where she met Robert Froelich. The married in 1943 and after the war lived in Corpus Christi, Texas. They taught music and played in the orchestra there until 1949, when Robert was hired to teach music at Ashland College. He and Mildred both completed graduate studies during summers at Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY), where she studied with ‘cellist Luigi Silva.

After teaching music in the Ashland school system and starting a family, Mildred returned to college to become a math teacher. She taught math at Juggles-Troy, Appleton, Ashland Junior and Senior High Schools, and North High Scholl in Columbus. During this time she was chosen to participate in math education projects at Purdue and Columbia Universities and earned a Masters Degree at Ohio State.

Mildred was dedicated and proficient musician. She played ‘cello in the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra and in the professional orchestras of Akron (conducted by Louis Lane), Mansfield, Ashland, Lakeside, and Columbus. She performed in chamber music recitals with members of the music faculty of Ashland College, and played in chamber music groups across north central Ohio. She participated in seasonal orchestra performances both at the College and in the area, and occasionally played in church.

Mildred frequently attended music and theater performances, and supported groups in Cleveland, Ashland, and Wooster. A crossword puzzle fan, she was also adept at quoting poetry, and creative with adapting song lyrics to present circumstances to entertain her family. After retirement form teaching, she enjoyed travel in the western United States and Europe. Mildred was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ashland.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Froelich. She is survived by a sister, Joyce White of Chillicothe; a daughter and son-in-law, Marcy and Richard England of suburban Portland, Oregon; a granddaughter, Kathryn England of Boston; and a son, Jim of Ashland.
