Michael W. Smelser, 49, of Rockville, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, December 11, 2021, at St. Vincent Clay Hospital in Brazil.
He was born March 3, 1972, in Lafayette to Gary Smelser and Anne (Meyer) Rickard. He was a 1990 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and completed his Journeyman training in Pipefitting. He was a proud member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local #157 and has been with them for over 29 years. He had been an estimator with Shambaugh and Sons for the last 4 years.
On June 8, 2018, Michael married Lori Martin in Rockville, Indiana. Michael enjoyed spending time with his family and pets. He enjoyed the outdoors and mushroom hunting. He had a passion for music, was quick-witted and intelligent, artistic, and loved all things football.
Along with his wife Lori, he is survived by 2 children, Nicole (Eric) Purcell of West Lafayette and Kaitlyn Shields of South Bend; his parents, Gary and Anne; 2 sisters, Micki (Dave) Merrell of Lafayette and Kristy Conner of Lafayette; his grandfather, Stanley Smelser of Lafayette; and 1 niece and 4 nephews.
