Michael Ray Phelps , 59, of Greenwood, passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2016. He was born on February 13, 1957, in Indianapolis, to his parents George “Bill” and Shirley (Greene) Phelps.
Michael was a retired Army veteran of the 101st Airborne-Fire Rescue and worked for the Local 18 – Indianapolis, Heat and Frost Insulators; he retired in 2000. He was a Mason, a member of the Greenwood VFW, and attended the Vineyard Church. Michael participated in the Civil War Round Table. He graduated from Greenwood High School, class of 1975. He was a member of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department for 13 years and of Asbestos Workers Local 18- Indianapolis.
Michael was the author of two books, Dark and Bloody Ground and Dark and Bloody Ground, Sowing the Wind.
He is survived by his children, Michael W. (Shannon Lochard) Phelps of Whiteland, Emily E. (Zachary Walkup) Phelps of New Whiteland, Anne M. (William Stevenson) Phelps of Greenwood, one sister, Roberta (Michael) Arthur of Whiteland, two brothers, Robert “Bob” Sue Phelps of Fruitdale, and William “Bill” (Debbie) Phelps of Martinsville, seven grandchildren, Michael, Kaceik, and Easton Phelps, Haiden Redinger, Hailey Statzer, Dalton Walkup, and Brylee Lochard, his former wife, Christa Phelps, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and his beloved dog, Teddy. Michael was preceded in death by his parents, George and Shirley Phelps.
