Michael William Rufener, 66, passed away in his home on October 21, 2021 surrounded by his four girls and Suzanne. He was born February 6, 1955, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to William Louis Rufener and Betty Mae Denkers Rufener.
Mike was raised in Salt Lake City with his parents and brother Edward Rufener and graduated from Granite High School in 1973. He was active in VICA and became a very proficient welder. Mike served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, from 1974-76. Upon his return, he worked for Monroc and St. George Steel, before securing his dream job with the Utah Highway Patrol, where he served for 21 years. Along with his highway patrol career, he worked part time providing security for several different companies. After his retirement, he opened Rufener Construction, remodeling kitchens and cabinetry. He then went to work in the Attorney General’s Office until his second retirement in 2018.
He lived a life full of adventure. He enjoyed traveling, boating, guns, attending concerts, all kinds of music, great friends, and extraordinary family vacations with his children and 16 grandchildren, including Dylan, Preston, Marissa, and Caleb Uboldi; Connor, Tanner, and Bailey Johnson; Tony Rufener and Kyler Vique; Kamyn and Kenya Stoker; Lily Moural; and Taylor, Diesel, Hudson, and Brooklyn Buck.
The family would like to thank the hospital staff at McKay Dee for their quick and skilled response, Intermountain Homecare & Hospice for their dedicated care and guidance, and our sincere gratitude to dad’s special angel, Suzanne, for her loving care and compassion during his final days.
