Ten little fingers and ten little toes. The small, delicate hand of a baby can touch the soul, and as one person put it, “The littlest feet make the biggest footprints in our hearts.” A miracle came down upon earth and changed a family forever. He made people smile, strangers cry, moved hearts, and cheered spirits. His eyes shown magnificently; his face radiated so handsomely. How could anyone guess that a baby could teach adults the meaning of strength and bravery? How could one tiny little baby be such a big boy all the sudden? Little Michael Lucas Sias, his Mommy and Daddy’s little fighter, was a miracle to them and all who knew him.

On Friday, October 30, 2016, little Michael came into this world to the delight of his father and mother, Rolando and Angela Sias; however, he had already entered deep into their love and their hearts. Leading up to little Michael’s coming, his Momma and his Daddy were so excited! Throughout Angela’s pregnancy with Michael, Rolando would talk to his son and blessed his son before going to work in the morning and before they went to bed at night. During the day, his Mom would sing to him little songs and tunes which made him happy inside of her. Even in the womb, Michael formed special bonds with his family. During the times that he would be still inside Angela, all his sister had to do was talk to him and he would start kicking and squirming away. He loved the sound of his sister’s voice, and already had a love for her. Similarly, as soon as he could hear his grandmother’s voice, he would start moving and kicking excitedly. He was so in tune with his family; they were all ready for him to arrive out into the world.

Little Michael’s life was a blessed one from the start, but unlike most babies, his life was also a trying life. Michael came into this world about two months before his due date, but he came at the exactly right time to impact so many lives. As soon as he was born, he was placed into Parkland’s Infant Nursery and monitored. His condition was not favorable with the doctors and nurses, but they were all determined to help Little Michael and his loving family. During his time in the nursery, his dad would come straight from work, take a fast shower, and then stay by his side until he had to go to work again. His mother never left his side, both day and night; she was so strongly devoted to him. During their time with little Michael, his mom and dad would talk to him. His Momma would tell him that he was “Momma’s superhero,” her Superman, her Batman, and her Spiderman. She told him that he was there and needed “to save Mommy and Daddy.” Angela always told her son that he was her world. His Daddy told him all sorts of plans that they were going to do when they all got out of the hospital to encourage his son. His dad was going to buy a little puppy and name the puppy Charlie. After they got Charlie, they would build a tree house together to play in all day long. When Michael was old enough, Rolando told his son that he was going to teach him how to ride a bike. His daddy even promised to buy him the biggest Christmas Tree and planned to make this Christmas special for his little boy. Along with his parents, Michael also got visits from other members of his family. His grandpa would come by and start telling Michael that he was going was going to teach him how to throw a baseball. “You are going to be my baseball player,” he’d say as Michael wiggled his fingers and toes. His grandfather just knew Michael would grow up to be on the Texas Rangers with all of the strength and determination he displayed every day. His aunt also came by to see him often in the nursery. Once, she reached down to him, and his little hand grasped her finger. For such a little hand with such little fingers, he had a strong, firm grip! He held on to her finger and didn’t want to let go. It was just another example of the strength little Michael possessed.

Other than his amazing feats of strength and bravery, Michael inherently had another special gift: he had the ability to bring people together. During his time in the Parkland Nursery, little Michael weaved his way into his caring nurses’ hearts. A little more time passed, and the doctors began to feel joy when they saw him. Michael’s influence spread over many departments and many floors of the Parkland Hospital. Nurses and doctors would talk to each other about the amazing miracle baby that was fighting against all odds. Little Michael inspired so many and touched the hearts of many more.

Michael Lucas Sias was a special baby; nobody could deny that statement. But Michael was also a true, God-breathed miracle, who seemed to be a part of miracles each day. Before Michael was born, nuns from the convent came by to see Angela and Ronaldo to congratulate them on their precious baby boy. The Mother Superior told Michael’s parents that Michael was indeed special and that he was going to be born to them for one of God’s special purposes. She lovingly and kindly remarked that he was on the earth for a reason. As soon as she said that, Michael kicked inside of Angela almost like John the Baptist jumped for joy inside of Elizabeth. It was certainly more than just a coincidence, and the little miracles kept coming. Despite all that was against him, little Michael fought against what many doctors expected. He was strong and determined for his Mom and Dad. His strength and willpower baffled doctors and many of them claimed that he was one of the strongest babies they had ever seen. Another miracle Michael was involved in was when doctors at Children’s Medical Center told Angela and Ronaldo that there was nothing more they could do for Michael. As Angela cried and lamented that she couldn’t help Michael and that even the best hospital in Dallas couldn’t save him, the doctor in charge of the department and the floor walked by the room. As he heard Angela and Ronaldo’s cries of sorrow and despair, he walked into the room and straight up to them to ask if he could try one last procedure to save their son’s life. Although his attempts could not save little Michael, it was a testament that God was providing hope and comfort to his parents as they faced the likelihood that their son, their world, would not make it much longer. Even to his last day, Michael still proved that miracles do exist. On Friday, November 18, 2016, 19 days after little Michael came into the world, Angela and Rolando had to make a decision many parents couldn’t find the strength or the will to make. After the surgery failed to help Michael and a cure couldn’t be found, Michael’s parents requested that the doctors remove the tubes and wires that encased Michael for most of his short life and helped him survive. His parents were told that Michael could either die immediately or after a very short period of time. However, when the tubes were removed, family members gently picked up and held Michael and began saying their last goodbyes, but Michael was still alive. His little heart kept beating and his little lungs kept breathing until each family member got a chance to hold him, tell him how much they loved him, and tell him goodbye. During this whole time, Michael mostly kept his little eyes closed, but as his strong little heart gave one last beat, he opened his eyes to look upon his family, the world, and most importantly, his devoted and loving parents.

Every day for Michael came with its own special miracle. Every heartbeat and every breath was precious. The smiles and laughs his little presence caused were priceless. His ability to cause joy and to bring people together was extraordinary. Even his skill to wiggle his little toes and fingers touched the hearts of his family. The strength and courage he held within his little heart inspired so many people, family and strangers alike. Little Michael Lucas Sias came to this world as a blessing, and his life was a true miracle to his family and his parents.

Little Michael Lucas Sias is survived by his devoted, loving parents, Ronaldo and Angela Sias; his beloved sister, Pamella Sias; and his caring paternal grandparents, Armadima Jiminez and Edwardo Sias. Michael Lucas Sias is joined in Heaven by his brothers, Xavier, Miguel, and Martin Sias, and his maternal grandparents, Jose and Petra Garcia.
