Michael Edgar Mayse, 68, of Bristol, died at 1:28 p.m. Monday, May 19, after an extended illness, at the Center for Hospice Care, Elkhart.

Michael was born Jan. 25, 1946, in Gary. His parents were James and Ethel (Spory) Mayse.

Michael married Sue Frost on June 29, 2006, at Bonneyville Mill Park, Bristol.

Michael earned a four-year degree in business and mining. For many years, he owned his own coal business. He also worked in heavy road construction and demolition. In recent years he worked as an estimator, properties manager and recycling manager. He was affiliated with Bristol United Methodist Church and Premier Arts Theater Group.

A cancer survivor for 35 years, Michael used the time he had been given to make the world a better place. Michael loved the outdoors. He enjoyed boating, fishing, golfing and being on the farm. He loved animals, especially horses and dogs. Michael was a friend to all, with a quick wit and a ready smile. He loved to help others, was a great listener, and was known as a caring supervisor at work. At home, he loved to spend time with family and friends and was known as the Grill Master.

Michael called himself a Pennsylvania Hillbilly, but he was far from that. He was a man of stature, class and humor. During his long final battle with illness he still took the time to thank each doctor, nurse and caregiver with a handshake and smile. He was a friend, mentor and hero to many.

Surviving are his wife, Sue Frost Mayse of Bristol; daughter Tiffany Mayse of Somerset, Pa.; stepdaughter Ashley Frost (Mark) Nugent of Bristol; grandson Eli Joshua Nugent of Bristol; brother Charlie (Judy) Mayse of Boswell, Pa.; stepmother Kris Mayse of Boswell; and father and mother-in-law Ron and Sharon Gray of Lake Ann, Mich.
