Michael Earl Smiley, 61, of Columbus, died Tuesday April 28th at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Newnan, Ga, following complications after a simple procedure. Mike had survived the last 7 years with lung cancer, working right up to his death. Born in Salinas, California in 1958 to Army parents, the late Sgt. Wesley Earl Smiley and Virginia Smiley of Columbus, he lived in and around the area for most of his life. Following graduation from Kendrick High school, he enlisted in the US Navy and served aboard the carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. At home here he attended tech college and owned and operated Computer Masters in Phoenix City. During the last 20 years he became a professional truck driver for numerous big fleet companies, seeing this country and photographing his journey, which earned home the ID Picture taker. After working years as an on road driver trainer for Werner trucking, he became an owner operator for them and took his wife on the road with him. He was survived by his wife and partner of 10 years, Tatiana Anatoly Smiley, his sons, Brendan Wesley and Kyle Patrick Smiley of Phoenix, Arizona, her daughters Yana and Vlada , grandsons Timothy and Max of Russia, and his sister Kathleen Smiley Alleman of Snellville, Ga. and her children Michael Alleman of Hurst, Tx and Kari Alleman of Snellville Ga. and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased in death by a sister, Navy Lcdr Colleen Smiley Owendoff of Annapolis, Maryland, and an infant brother, Patrick Michael Smiley, of Iowa.
