Michael Dwayne Martin, age 58, of Shelton Way, Mt. Sterling, loving husband of Leta Ann Howard Martin, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 8, 2021, at his home surrounded by his devoted family.
Born September 25, 1962, in Mt. Sterling, Mike is the son of Raymond and Dorothy Jean Smith Martin of Mt. Sterling.
Other survivors include his brother, Doug Martin; sister, Michelle Hatton; two nieces and a nephew; and a special friend, Mike Hinkle, all of Mt. Sterling.
Mike enjoyed traveling with his loving wife, fishing with his grandson Kylan, and attending his granddaughter Ryleigh’s softball games. He loved camping with friends and family. Softball was something Mike enjoyed playing; however, of all his hobbies, work and serving his community was one of his greatest passions.
At 16, Mike began volunteering with his dad Raymond at the Montgomery County Fire and EMT. His love of serving the community led him to becoming a police officer. He began at the Mt. Sterling Police Department in 1985. After six years, he entered the Kentucky State Police Academy in Frankfort. Following graduation, Mike was placed at Post 8 in Morehead in 1991 and served as a detective in various capacities for several years. He retired in 2004 from the KSP.
With a desire to continue to serve his community, Mike went on to work for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department as a School Resource Officer and Detective from 2004-2006. In 2007, Mike served as Chief of Police for the City of Owingsville. Later, in an effort to protect children in all schools, Mike was instrumental in the development of the Montgomery County School District Law Enforcement Police Department, where he served as the director. He ended his career as a police officer and detective with Morehead State University. Mike never left his post even during his extended battle with cancer.
In December 2020, another personal goal was achieved when Mike earned an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Bluegrass Community and Technical College.
