Michael A. Yanek, age 89, of Salem died Sunday morning, November 10, 2013 at the Salem Community Hospital. He was born August 30, 1924 in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of the late John and Mary (Tabus) Yanek. Mr. Yanek had been a machinist for 19 years for N.R.M. and had previously been a truck driver. He was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church, member of the Men’s Club of the Church, a church usher, Bingo Caller and had served on the church council for many years. He had been a Boy Scout Leader for 27 years at St. Paul. Mike had also been a member of the Salem Slovak Club, Leetonia American Legion, Knights of Columbus Council 1818 in Salem where he was a 4th degree Knight, and a member of Leetonia Sportsman Club, and Slovak Catholic Sokol. He served in WWII with the U.S. Navy. His wife, Ann C. (Kicko) Yanek, whom he married June 23, 1945, survives him; along with two daughters, Kathleen (Roger) Weikart of Salem and Mary Jane (Richard) Pieren of Salem; two brothers, John (Helen) Yanek of Salem and Steve (Margaret) of Youngstown; four grandchildren, Michael (Renee) Weikart, Michelle Weikart, Lori (Bill) Tungate and Richard (Whitney) Pieren; and eight great-grandchildren. His brother, Frank Yanek preceded him in death.
