Michael A.Ryan, 75, passed away in Phoenix, AZ on January 23, 2021 surrounded by
family. Michael was born on August 23, 1945 to Audrey Jean (Shuford) and Ernest Leo
Ryan in Weslaco, Texas. After attending school in Weslaco, Michael pursued higher
education with his attendance at University of North Texas in Denton, TX. He then went on
to achieve an Associate of Applied Science degree in Electronic at Amarillo College in
Amarillo, TX. Michael also attended West Texas State University (Canyon,TX) when he
achieved both a Bachelors in Business Administration in general business as well as a
Masters of Science in Engineering Technology.
Michael was retired military having served in the United States Coast Guard as well as the
Navy Reserves. Upon relocating back in Texas, Michael worked at Amarillo College from
1979 until his retirement in 2003. While there, he worked in a variety of positions, including
Associate Professor in Computer information Systems. After retirement, he relocated to
Phoenix, Arizona, where he continued to work in the academic environment as an academic
counsellor at University of Phoenix. Michael also completed a bucket list item by acquiring
his Real Estate License and worked as a realtor for both Century 21 and Keller Williams
agencies.
Michael had a great curiosity about life. Among his many interests were computers,
camping, photography, and lapidary. Michael also had taken lessons in weaving and was
very involved in the fiber arts community. Michael loved to travel. He and Nancy shared the
sights and experiences of some amazing road trips.
Michael was preceded in death by both parents as well as his brother-in-law, Keith Tibbetts.
He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Nancy (Welch). He is survived by a sister Michele
Ryan-Tibbetts of Texas and niece Kelsie Pompa of Kansas. He is also survived by
daughters Christy (Kevin) Burson of Phoenix,AZ and Lana (Brendan) Baird of Arlington, TX
as well as 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Michael’s family is exceedingly grateful to the staff of Dignity Health/Barrows Neurological
Medical Center for the great care they gave Michael during the last weeks of his life.
