Merrill A. Nichols, 99, died on Saturday, January 8, 2022. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Betty) B. Nichols. He was born September 28, 1922, in Hartford. He and Betty were married in 1947 in Hartford and moved to Newington in 1954. In 2005, they returned to Hartford to live at Avery Heights. Merrill graduated from Hartford Public High School, Class of 1940. He was employed by the Travelers Insurance Company for nearly 40 years and served in Europe during World War II in the US Air Corps. For several years he was Treasurer for the Town of Newington and was active with the Newington Historical Society and Trust. He was a member of the Church of Christ Congregational, Newington, and served as a deacon and in other capacities. Merrill and Betty spent many summers enjoying their cottage on Quassett Lake in Woodstock, CT, with their children. They also did a good deal of traveling throughout the United States. They loved camping, canoeing, biking, and cross-country skiing. Merrill leaves his son, Kenneth (Ken) Nichols, and daughter in law, Fausta Esguerra, of Hampton, CT, and daughter, Margery Nichols, of Lebanon, CT.
