Merlynn Moore was born on February 4, 1944, in Red River County, Texas to her parents, Archie Woods, Sr. and Thesolean Lockhart Woods. She was the first born in the family. She was raised surrounded by her brothers, Tommie, Archie, Jr., Mark, W. James and her sisters, Mary, Wanda, Eulla, Connie and Bonnie. Growing up, she was the surrogate mother to her nine siblings while her mother worked. She was very active in sports, playing baseball and a member of the bowling team.
