Duncan, Merle Elizabeth “Betty” (Pittsinger)Betty (Pittsinger) Duncan, 96, of Newington, passed away on June 21, 2015. Her husband of 64 years, Edward M. Duncan, predeceased her, as did all eight of her siblings. Betty was born in Newington on November 13, 1918 to the late George and Myrtle (Barrett) Pittsinger. She lived in Newington her entire life, with the exception of two or three years at the beginning of her marriage. Her family lived in the center of town where banks and stores are now located, and some of her memories included stories of the trolley that ran through town, her father’s runaway cow and her father’s fabulous produce that fed the family through the Depression. Because there was no high school in Newington, she graduated from New Britain High School in 1937. As a young woman, she loved tennis and she was an avid reader, animal lover, fine gardener and great cook and possessed abundant energy. She made mohair teddy bears that rival Steiff bears and “placed” them in many good homes as she could. Betty worked at Traveler’s Insurance Co. for many years and was a docent at the Kellogg-Eddy House in Newington for fifteen years. She leaves her son William Duncan and his wife Loretta of Old Saybrook, her daughter Mary Lawrence and her husband John of Glastonbury, one grandchild, Christina Lawrence, of Providence, Rhode Island, and her step-grandchild Heather Jim and her family of Tampa, FL. In addition, she leaves her brother-in-law Richard Duncan and his wife Marilyn of West Hartford, and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves her beloved cat Pumpkin, now of Old Saybrook.
