Melvyn (Mel) Holdsworth, age 77, of Fairfield, beloved husband of 54 years to Georgina (Valentine) Holdsworth, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, September 2, 2021, after a long courageous battle with cancer.  Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, England, the son of the late Herbert and Edna (Stansfield) Holdsworth, he had been a Fairfield resident since 1981. Mel attended Crossley and Porter Grammar School, Halifax, and received his degree in Chemistry from Huddersfield Tech in England. He worked as an Industrial Chemist for Coal Tar Research and also BTI in Yorkshire; then with American Cyanamid (Stamford, CT) which brought Mel and his family to the States in 1981. An avid squash player, he was a member of the Intensity Squash Club in Norwalk. Mel enjoyed watching sports of all kinds; especially English football, rugby, and golf. He enjoyed traveling and river cruising and was a fan of big brass band music. He was a social member of the LT Raymond Bower Post 1466 Catholic War Veterans. Survivors in addition to his loving wife Georgina include two beloved children, Kathryn H. Wallace of Rutland, MA and Michael Holdsworth, M.D. and his wife Megan of Ellicott City, MD; four cherished grandchildren, Olivia and Rowan Wallace, Benjamin and Graham Holdsworth; a sister, Elaine Mills and her husband John of Yorkshire, England and several nieces, nephews and in-laws in England and Scotland.
