Melvin Ray Barnes, age 89, passed away February 2, 2016 at Bronson Commons in Mattawan, Michigan. Melvin was born January 31, 1927 in Malden, Missouri the son of Baker and Florence (Mangold) Barnes. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. For many years he owned and operated a dairy farm in the Centreville area, then worked for over 15 years as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator for St. Joseph County until his retirement. He was a member of the Portage Church of Christ and now a member of the Westside Church of Christ.

Melvin loved to work, travel, hunt and cook (was especially good preparing meat), but the most important part of his life was his family. He was preceded in death by his first wife Jane Marie Barnes in 1997; by his parents and by all his siblings Elsie Pressley, Pauline Estes, Mary Thompson, Naomi Barnes, Rachael James, Freda White, Esther MacMullen, Emerson Barnes, Wilford Barnes and Ralph Barnes. On May 28, 1978 he was united in marriage to Dorothy L. (Bell) Barnes who survives. Also surviving are his children Ellen Barnes, Carol (Scott) Williamson, Jim (Leann) Clay, Mark Clay and Terry (Amy) Clay; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
