The sun rose on the life of Mr. Melvin Lee, Jr. on September 15, 1949 when he was born in Durant, Mississippi to Melvin Lee, Sr. and Carmell McGee. One of seven children, Melvin had four brothers, Lawrence, Oscar, William and Gary and two sisters, Betty and Carmen. Educated in the public school system, Melvin graduated from Cassopolis High School.Melvin proudly served his country in the United States Army.
He began his active duty on July 30, 1969 and completed his tour of duty on May 28, 1971. His final rank was PFC and he received an Honorable Discharge from the government and a grateful nation.In July 1988, Melvin was united in marriage with the love of his life, Teresa Raven in Lubbock, Texas. “He was her ‘Bugger Bear’ and ‘Honey’. She even had some of the grandkids calling him ‘Honey’.” The union was blessed with five children, Aaron, Derahni, Donnie, Dawnetia and Shantavian. The children remember that he was “always a hard worker and kept a job; always looking out for his family and children, even his stepchildren whom he raised as his own.” His grandchildren, Thomas, Dahni, Mia and Jeremiah loved hanging out with Papa!A hard working man, Melvin was a cook with the U.S. Army and was later employed with Texas Instruments.
He also had his own ice cream truck. In his free time, he enjoyed family and friends, reading, bowling and movies. His best friend was his wife. A strong survivor and a fighter to the end, Melvin was known and loved for his love and caring spirit. This kind, giving and loving man will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to have shared a part of his life.On October 22, 2012, the sun set on the life of Mr. Melvin Lee, Jr. as he passed from this life into eternal rest.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife, Teresa Lee of Aurora, Colorado; sons Aaron Jennings of Cassopolis, Derahni Raven and Donnie Austin, both of Aurora, Colorado; daughters, Dawnetia (Thomas) Boyknight of Germany and Shantavian Austin-Poll of Dallas, Texas; brothers, Lawrence Lee of Chicago, Illinois, Oscar (Shelly Archuleta) Lee of Aurora, Colorado; William (Mable) Lee of Niles, and Gary Lee of Phoenix, Arizona; sisters, Betty Lee (Billy) Nichols of Atlanta, Georgia and Carmen (Paul) Peake of Cassopolis; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces nephews, other relatives and friends.
