Melvin Leroy Cain, Jr., age 70, a resident of Sunset Beach for 30 years, died at his home on November 11, 2016 after battling cancer for three years.
He was born on September 1, 1946, in Baltimore, to the late June and Melvin Cain, Sr. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1964, where he completed high school and learned seamanship, serving until 1968. He went on to work for 30 years on tugboats for Baltimore Gas & Electric, completed Baltimore Navigation School, and rose to the rank of tugboat captain. He was a member of the American Legion and the local Ravens Roost, and enjoyed fishing, vacationing in Ocean City, watching the Ravens and the Orioles, and having fun camping with his family.
Along with his parents, Mel is preceded in death by his sister Janice Darlene Cain, and his son in law Robert Schmidt.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years: Donna Cain; his daughter Tracy Schmidt, of Pasadena; his son Brian Cain and his wife Wendy, of Pasadena; three grandchildren: Taylor, Caitlyn, and Brian Cain, Jr., all of Pasadena; and three brothers: Randall Cain, of Selbyville, Delaware, Tom Cain, of Pasadena, and Paul Cain, also of Pasadena.
