Melissa E. Cox, 90, 0f Virginia, IL died Monday, November 9, 2015, at Heritage Manor South in Beardstown, IL.

She was born April 6, 1925 in Philadelphia, IL, the daughter of Louis H. and Edith E. Miller McClure. She married Oliver Cox on September 26, 1942 in Palmyra, MO and he preceded her in death on August 12, 1978.

She is survived by five children, Jerrie Jo (Bob) Kingston of Janesville, WI, Nora Mae (Donald) Chapman of Virginia, George Lee (Glenda) Cox of Chandlerville, Dale Dee (Coni) Cox of Virginia, and Mary Ann (Wes) Newbern of Beardstown; 14 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Guffey of Virginia, Ellen Reeves of Springfield, and Emma Sue (Ron) Cox of Springfield, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two children, Lucy Jane Chilton (surviving son, Buck Chilton of Beardstown) and Nathan Orie Cox (surviving wife, Kris of Virginia); five brothers, Johnny, Harrison, Louis, Tom, and Charlie McClure; and two sisters, Louella Dean Chapman and Viola McClure.

Melissa attended Oregon School in rural Cass County. She was a dedicated homemaker and farm wife assisting her husband with the farming operation. She later worked for Hertzberg-New Method Book Bindery in South Jacksonville and then for Mobil Chemical in Jacksonville, retiring after 25 years of service. Melissa had a passion for children of all ages and spent many hours babysitting for her friends and family. In her spare time, she enjoyed playing cards, mushroom hunting, and attending rodeos.
