MAYO TURNER was born on May 7, 1924 in the community of Shady Grove near Saline, LA. He departed this life on Wednesday, November 26, 2013 in San Diego, California.

Mayo was the youngest of seven children born to Lawrence Turner and Mirah Woods-Turner. His early and formative years were spent in Shady Grove along with a large and extended family and many friends. Mayo was very young when his father passed. However, his older siblings were very instrumental in helping his mother raise him. There was always a strong bond between Mayo and his siblings.

Mayo attended Shady Grove High School until he was drafted to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. Upon receiving his Honorable Discharge, Mayo returned to school on the G. I. Bill and graduated from Shady Grove High School in 1952.

In August of 1958, Mayo united in marriage with his childhood sweetheart, Essie Mae Gray.

Before being called home on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, Mayo stated that he had “seen the City.” (Revelation 21:2 states that John “saw the Holy City, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of Heaven.”)

He was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Elmo, Lone and Newman Turner; his three sisters, Adline Turner-Martin, Hattie Turner-Pigg and Ruthie Lee Turner-Henry and great-grandson, Rasheed Floyd Martin who is walking around Heaven with his great-grandfather.
