Maynard “Mick” Allen Schurman was born Nov. 1, 1934 in Melrose Park, Illinois to Jacob and Bertha (Oosting) Schurman. They later moved to a farm in Beecher, Illinois. On May 28, 1954, he married the love of his life, Marilyn Kingma, and moved to DeMotte, Indiana. In 1960, they moved to their farm in Thayer, where he lived the rest of his life.
He was an active member of The First Christian Reformed Church in DeMotte and was a supporter of Christian education. He went to be with his Lord on September 11, 2011, at his home. His priority in life, second only to God, was his beloved family which consisted of his wife of 57 years, his 9 children and their spouses, his 16 grandsons, 14 granddaughters, 2 great granddaughters, and 2 great grandsons.
He was the hero of and dearly loved by each. His legacy of faith, love of nature, and sense of humor will live on through them. Nine children and their spouses: Michael (Ginny) Schurman, Laurel (Phil) Goodyk, Mary (Dale) Walvort, Joel (Barb) Schurman, Jacob (Sherry) Schurman, Ruth (Randy) Van Beek, Julie (Kurt) De Jong, Robert (Bonnie) Schurman, and Mark (Terri) Schurman. 30 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.
Mick is also survived by his sister Evelyn (Duke) Hoekstra and brother Clarence “Click” (Chris) Schurman. Brothers & sisters-in-law: Rich and Frances Kros, Ed and Pat Kingma & Dary and Rita Kingma. Mick was preceded in death by his mother, father and his brothers: Maynard, Henry and Jacob. Memorials may be made to DeMotte Christian School, Covenant Christian High School, and/or Bible League International.
