Maynard “Sid” Duane Sidman, 83, passed from this life on February 15, 2022, in Denver, CO.  Sid was born September 13, 1938, in Stafford County, KS, to Virgie Christina (Rose) and Orville Forrest Sidman.

Sid graduated with the Class of 1956 from St. John High School (KS), where he was a member of the football team, and studied liberal arts at Pratt Community College shortly thereafter.

At the age of 13, Sid was a carryout boy for his first employer, Dillons Grocery, in St. John, KS, and he proudly kept his first paycheck throughout the years.

He joined the U.S. Army during high school, and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, in
June 1957.  As a cook, Sergeant Sidman developed his love of cooking.  He earned the M-1 Rifle Expert’s Badge, and remembered his rifle’s serial number until the day he died.  Prior to his honorable discharge on January 31, 1965, he served as a reservist.

He continued his career with Dillons Grocery as a meat cutter for the next 21 years.  Dillons transferred his family from Wichita, KS, to Ozark, AR, then to Springdale, AR.

He accepted a job offer as meat market manager at Pickle’s Thrif-T-Wise Grocery Store and moved his family to Broken Arrow, OK, on July 3, 1976.  He joked that the bicentennial fireworks celebration was to welcome his family to Broken Arrow.  As store manager, he trained many Broken Arrow youth, some of whom were his daughters’ classmates.  He is still well loved and respected by his former employees.

In 1981, he made a significant decision to begin a new career and established the Farmers Insurance Sid Sidman Agency.  Because he was such a people person, many of his clients became friends.  After 25 years with the agency, he retired on September 1, 2006.

Sid married Carolyn “Sue” Wasson on December 24, 1959, in Wichita, KS.  To this union, two daughters were born:  Deborah Diane Sidman Ash Burton and Donna Denise Sidman Stiles Collins.

After celebrating a loving 45-year marriage together, Sue passed away at the age of 62 on January 4, 2005.  Sid reconnected with his childhood sweetheart, Sondra “Sonie” Sue Ellis Nicholas Smithers Sidman and, on July 24, 2006, they were married.

Family was of utmost importance to Sid.  One of his favorite memories was a Spring Break vacation to Lake Powell, UT, where he rented a houseboat for his children and grandchildren to fellowship/fish/enjoy together.  He especially relished long-distance phone calls during football games, sharing gardening and cooking tips, assisting with car repairs over the phone, telling memorable stories about the interesting happenings from day to day, and providing sage advice and encouragement to all of his grandchildren.  He always said, “I should write a book”.

As a child, he dreamed of being a railroad engineer which spurred his lifelong love of trains.  Also in his younger days, he enjoyed family hunting trips with bird dogs in Kansas.  He introduced his family to his love of boats and water skiing.  For years, he enjoyed cooking and trying new recipes, regular phone calls with his grandchildren, as well as nightly phone calls from his nephew.  His many interests included reading from his extensive Louis L’Amour leatherette book collection, Broncos and Razorback football, radio-controlled airplanes, model cars, and vintage cars.

He is survived by his wife, Sonie Sidman, and stepson, Kent Nicholas, of Englewood, CO; daughters, Debbie Burton and husband Terry, and Donna Collins, all of Broken Arrow, OK.  Grandchildren, Aaron Ash; Angela Ash; Anthony Ash; Stephanie (Stiles) and husband Drew Caldwell; Matthew Collins; Nathan Collins; and his 1973 Mustang convertible.  Great-granddaughters, Tierney Caldwell and Evelyn Caldwell.  Brother, Gary Sidman and wife Jeanette; two nephews, Donald John Sidman, wife Chandler, and son Gale; Raymond Sidman, wife Heather, and children Liam, Kayla, and Briar.  Brother-in-law, Sam Henderson, along with numerous cherished family members and lifetime friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Orville Forrest Sidman, in 2000; his wife, Sue Sidman, in 2005; his mother, Virgie Christina Sidman, in 2005, and his sister, Ronda Joan Henderson, in 2020.

Broken Arrow, OK 74011.
