Maxine A. Kuhn age 93 of Anderson passed to her eternal reward on May 31, 2013, at Chesterfield’s Millers Merry Manor after a six-month setback from a broken hip. A big thank you to the staff at Millers and Heartland Hospice for their excellent care. Maxine was born in Middletown, Indiana on October 25, 1919, to Branson and Bertha Cox VanMeter.
She graduated from Anderson High School in 1942 and received her undergraduate degree from Olivet Nazarene University and a MA from Ball State University. She thoroughly believed in ONU and encouraged many young people from Anderson First Church of the Nazarene during their stay there. She married Wilson Kuhn in 1956 and made her home with him on Park Road in Anderson. They had no children of their own, But Maxine influenced approximately 500 children as she taught 1st grade at Valley Grove School for 23 years, retiring in 1981. Twelve years after retirement she became surrogate gramma to Josh and Katie Sylvester. She loved every minute of the next 15 years she spent with them. Very few conversations were ever finished without a Josh and Katie story. Becky and Steve are the grateful parents who treated Maxine like a queen. She served her church with this philosophy: “If you are going to do something, do it like you are doing it for God. Do it as perfectly as you can and then go on to the next project.” She served as SS teacher, SS supervisor, and Social Chairman where she planned all the big social gatherings including MD banquets, Advent afterglows, and numerous parties. She was the life of any party. During her lifetime, she was honored with The Distinguished Service Award twice. Maxine loved to go to lunch with the Windows in Action on Sunday and watch the Pacers and share Monday shopping and lunch with her friend Rose Swagar. She liked to travel, and participate in Dare to Care, and the Widows in Action field trips.
Surviving is one brother, James Elwood VanMeter, and his 5 children. Ruth’s children, Jan Reinbold Paul, Jim Folsom Virginia, Pat Cunnington Dave, and Kevin Folsom Linda; and several nieces & nephews. Jan Knotts was privileged to be her friend and caregiver for the last 5 years.
