Max H Deus passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Sunday September 5th after a 2 week battle with pneumonia. He was predeceased by his parents Max & Theresa Deus, his son-in-law James Takacs, and his faithful companions Pierre, Heidi, Billy, Gretchen, and Maggie. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lynn who he married on July 30, 1982. Also surviving are his step-daughter Alison Marie Takacs, of Tennessee, and his step-son Edward Frank Kaminski and wife Rebecca, of Georgia: and his loving grandchildren, Christine Caston and husband T.C. and their children Trinten, Clayton, and Annalise; Elizabeth Bonnani and husband Blake, Katie Kaminski and fiance Benjamin Eulenfeld, his namesake and only grandson Max Kaminski, all of Georgia and Rosemary Takacs and Grace Takacs of Tennessee, and his sister-in-law Cynthia Simoni of Pittsburgh and several cousins. He is also survived by his loving furry companion, Sasha.
Max was born in Binghamton, NY on October 18, 1937. He graduated from Binghamton North High School in 1955 and from St. Bonaventure University in 1959. He began his teaching career in 1959 in Olean, NY where he taught Chemistry and Math. He then returned home to Binghamton where he taught for a short time at Binghamton High School until accepting a position at Seton High School in Endicott, NY, where he taught Math until 1976 when that school merged with Catholic Central High School in Binghamton to become Seton Catholic Central High School. He taught Math and German until his retirement and was the Vice Principal in his later years. He retired in 2000, after which he continued to teach summers at Upward Bound at Binghamton University until 2014. He also was a substitute teacher for the Brevard County Florida School District until 2018. He and his wife moved to Florida permanently in 2015, having been snowbirds since 2001. After God, and family, Max’s life was devoted to teaching and his students.
When he wasn’t teaching, Max had many hobbies. After his dogs, his greatest love was international travel. Many students benefitted from the trips he arranged to Germany. After retirement, he and Mary Lynn traveled the world, often by their favorite means, on cruises. He also loved attending live theater, playing cards, and having game nights with friends or family.
