Mavis V. Kelley

(1924-2014)

Mavis V. Kelley, age 89, of Escambia Farms, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Crestview Rehabilitation Center.  Mavis was born on August 26, 1924, in Laurel Hill, Florida and has been a long-time resident of Escambia Farms.

Mavis was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Howard Kelley.  She is survived by a son, Quinton Kelley and wife Maxine of Escambia Farms, a daughter Sylvia Jenkins and husband Tim of Crawfordville.  Their four grandchildren Bryan Kelley, Amber Leavitt, Kelley Moseley, and Kerry Prosser, were taught at an early age to pick peas and butter beans, peaches and blueberries all grown by Granny and Grandpa.  They were rewarded in nearby swimming holes and fish ponds.  Nine great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter knew them as Papa and Nana.

Mavis took pride in canning the many vegetables grown in their garden but her real enjoyment was to share with family and neighbors.   She loved to shell peas during therapy sessions at the Rehab Center.  She quickly earned the title “fastest pea sheller”.  As long as her health permitted Mavis kept up-to-date by calling friends and members of her family.   She was always able to give us an update.

The family extends their appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the staff of Crestview Rehabilitation Center especially the 300 hall.  They have been her family for three years.  Mavis called many of the staff  by a family member’s name and everyone was “Shug”.
