Mavis June Slazewski, 92, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 5:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 22, 2014 in Millers Merry Manor, New Carlisle, Indiana.

She was born on June 19, 1921 to the late Benton and Phoebe “Ethel” (Harrier) Hayes in Clinton, Indiana, and had lived in South Bend since 1927, until moving to New Carlisle in 2009. Along with her parents; one sister, Norma Greene also preceded her in death.

Mavis retired in 1983 from Dr. Paul J. Pierce’s Chiropractor Office in South Bend, where she worked as a Medical Assistant for 10 years.

On January 16, 1945, as Mavis June (Hayes) Milliken, she married Joseph J. Slazewski. He passed away on December 2, 2002.

Mavis is survived by her two daughters, Jacquelyn (Joseph) Lahiff of Tucson, Arizona; Donna M. Mahaffey of LaPorte, Indiana; her son, Dennis L. (Janice) Milliken of Rochester, Indiana; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Kilander of California; and Joyce Bettge of Tennessee.

Mavis was an U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. She served on the World War II Army Intelligence Branch of Arlington Hall Virginia, where she worked as a code breaker. Her group broke the code that prevented a troop ship form being sunk by the enemy.

All her life, she was a hard worker and was helpful to her friends and family in their time of need. Mavis enjoyed crocheting and loved animals. 3545 N. 3545 N.
