Maureen Lois (Shapiro) Berman, 77, formerly of Bloomfield, CT, passed away on October 22, 2009 in Laurel, MD. She was born in Middletown on November 26, 1931, and lived there until her marriage. She was a resident of Bloomfield from 1959 until 2008, when she moved to Laurel, MD. She was the daughter of the late Margaret and Herman Shapiro.
She graduated from Middletown High School as the salutatorian of the class of 1949, and from the University of Connecticut with a bachelorAA¿A½s degree in economics. She worked as a social worker for the state of Connecticut for five years, until she had children. Later, she received a masterA¯A¿A½s degree in counseling from the University of Hartford. She worked for many years as a guidance counselor for the Bloomfield school system, until her retirement in 1993. She was an active member of the Democratic Party, and served on the Bloomfield Democratic Town Committee. She was an ardent animal lover, and supported animal protection organizations and many other charities.
She leaves her husband, Alex Berman, of Silver Spring, MD, a daughter Susan Straney and her husband, David, of Laurel, MD, a son, David Berman, and his companion, Kristin Larsen, of Acton, MA, two grandchildren, Donald and Sarah Straney, a sister-in-law, Celia Shapiro, of Berlin, CT, and many other relatives.
She was predeceased by her brother, Robert.
