She was born on May 15, 1954, in Manassas, VA to the late Mary Virginia Carter and Walter Wilson Gordon. Mattie spent her life as a home maker and was an avid cat lover caring for not only her own cat but those of her sons. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert Taylor Whitmer. She is survived by her sons Oliver Whitmer and Bobby Whitmer.
