Mattie Compton Byrd Davis, 95, of 2936 A. L. Philpott Hwy., Axton, VA died Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at the Blue Ridge Manor, Martinsville, VA. She was born on May 19, 1917 in Leatherwood, VA to the late Sallie Elizabeth Wall Compton and William Riley Compton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas L. Byrd; second husband, Curtis Davis; sisters, Mamie C. Wilson and Frances C. Moore and brothers, J. William Compton and H. Clay Compton. Mrs. Davis was the oldest member of Axton Baptist Church, Axton, VA where she taught Sunday School for young people, sang in the choir, was a member of the Senior Citizens Sunday School Class and a member of UMW Also, she worked in the Respite Program for Henry County Baptist Association. She retired as a Lab Technician from DuPont with 32 years’ service. Mrs. Davis also volunteered for the Red Cross for 15 years Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, Oren Byrd and Wayne and Carolyn Byrd all of Martinsville, VA; sisters, Vergia C. Herndon of Danville, VA and Nellie C. Lovell of Martinsville, VA; granddaughter, Melani Byrd Helms and grand-son-in-law, Lemuel F. Helms; great-grandchildren, Haley Helms and Mattie Jo Helms; step-son, Melvin Davis of Patrick Springs, VA; step-daughter, Jencie Gibson of Axton, VA and several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
