Maryl Katherine (Kathy) Homan, born in Dallas, TX on June 27, 1940, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2014. A heart transplant recipient, we were Blessed to have had her with us for an extra 22 years.
Kathy to her friends, “Peaches” to her family and “Nanny” to her grandchildren, she was preceded in death by her parents, J. Herman & Olga Mills. Also in Heaven to greet Kathy was her brother, Albert Mills, and sister, Eva Mills, along with sons, Albert Homan and Duane Homan.
She is survived by her sisters, Esther Milner and Ramona Mathis; son John Homan, son and daughter-in-law Marc and Olga Homan, and daughter-in-law Angela Homan. Kathy was also survived by 13 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Kathy worked as an EKG Technician at Baylor Hospital from 1975 to 1979. In 1979 she started her career at the Residence Inn, ultimately retiring in the early 1990’s due to health issues with her heart. In 1992, following months in the hospital, Kathy was fortunate to be given a second chance, receiving “the gift of life” through a heart transplant.
So very thankful to a group of transplant recipients who volunteered their time visiting with her before and after her own transplant, she herself became a volunteer for the Baylor Hospital organization known as the “New Hearts and Lungs” support group. Kathy donated countless volunteer hours, eventually serving as President of the organization from 1998 – 2000.
Kathy loved and enjoyed being with her family and friends. She brought her pistachio salad and baked beans to every family event. Was always ready to travel anywhere you wanted to go, played a mean game of Uno and loved the thrill of yelling “Bingo!” We will miss her dearly, but we take comfort in knowing that she is in a much better place.
