Mary Virginia Whitten, 89, was born on November 6, 1917, in Williamsport, Indiana to Alonzo and Nancy (Lape) Citizen. Mary passed away Thursday, December 14, 2006, at Millers Merry Manor in New Carlisle, Indiana. She married Morris Whitten on February 24, 1940, in Williamsport, Indiana. Morris preceded her in death on December 14, 1997.

They had three children, Charles (Carol) Whitten of Lafayette, Indiana, Daniel (Eileen) Whitten of Niles, Michigan, Barbara Klemm of Rockport, Texas; nine grandchildren, Craig Whitten of Lafayette, Indiana, Kelly (Jon) Whitten-Green of Horseshoe Bend, Arkansas, Paul (Lisa) Klemm of Rockport, Texas, Dana (Charles) Doan of Austin, Arkansas, Caryn (Shane) Hildreth of Carmel, Indiana, Curt (Pamela) Whitten of Brookston, Indiana, Sarah (Mike) Burkett of Lexington, South Carolina, Emily Whitten of Chicago, Illinois, Andy Whitten of Ann Arbor, Michigan; 12 great- grandchildren, Dexter, Hunter & Sydney Whitten, Sawyer Whitten-Green, Rachel Klemm & Daniel Geyer, Kanyn & Maeden Doan, Jessica & Lauren Hildreth, and Jack & Josh Terry; two sisters, Betty Burns of St. Petersburg, Florida, Ruth Eckert of New Carlisle, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Betty Citizen of Noblesville, Indiana; and a stepbrother, Coburn Marlatt of Williamsport, Indiana. Her parents, two stepbrothers, a stepsister and a brother, George Citizen all preceded her in death.

Mary and Morris moved from Michigan City to New Carlisle in 1945, where they bought the home on Walnut Road and had lived there for 52 years, until Morris death. Marys life was one of caring for others. Among the many ways she served her family and her community include being a Brownie leader, a 4-H leader, a Future Homemakers sponsor, and cooking for the Lions Club for over 10 years. Mary was the Food Service Supervisor at the New Carlisle High School for 11 years, where she knew most of the high school students who attended there. She retired from Hamilton Grove as the Food Service Supervisor for 22 years. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 62 years, and an active member as well as a charter member of the New Carlisle Home Ec Club which was founded 50 years ago. She will be greatly missed by the congregation of the United Methodist Church of Lydick, Indiana, where she was an active and vital member since the early 1960s.
