Mary Sarah Flynn, 57, passed away in Hospice care on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Mary was born in Des Moines, the daughter of Peter Flynn, Sr. and Joan Flynn. She was intellectually disabled from birth and attended Ruby Van Meter School, Des Moines and St. Colletas in Jefferson, Wisconsin before returning to Des Moines. As years passed, Mary also developed severe physical disabilities which rendered her wheelchair bound. The last 12 years of her life she lived in a Progress Industries group home.
Despite all the things Mary had to deal with throughout her life, she was always cheerful and happy. You couldn’t keep Mary down. She loved listening to the Beach Boys, watching classic TV shows on Me TV, and talking about her “boyfriend,” Michael Knight. She filled a lot of her days writing letters to family and friends. Her letters always read, “I am your friend. Love, Mary Sarah Flynn.” Mary was a wonderful friend, and each of our lives was better for having her in it.
Mary is survived by brothers, Peter, Jr. (Nancy) and Andrew (Linda); sisters-in-law, Rosemary Flynn (Chuck Backstrom) and Pamela Flynn; 13 nieces and nephews and 21 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Jeffrey and Paul.
The family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at Mercy Hospital and at the Good Samaritan Society care facility in Indianola for their care and compassion for Mary during her last few weeks. A special thanks to the wonderful staff and people at Progress Industries who cared for Mary for the past 12 years.
