MARY COZART MORIARTY, a long-time resident of Northern Virginia and a former research chemist, died Sunday, July 7, 2002 at her home of Alzheimers Disease after a long illness. She was first diagnosed with the disease 19 years ago. Mrs. Moriarty was born July 6, 1926 in Charleston, West Virginia daughter of the late William and Lillian Groom Cozart. She graduated from Ohio Dominican College in Columbus, Ohio and then worked as a research chemist, first for the Union Carbide Company in Charleston, and after coming to this area for the National Bureau of Standards and Harris Research Laboratories. She had lived in Washingtons Chevy Chase and then after marriage resided in Alexandria, Fairfax County for forty years, and then for the past four years in Manassas. Before her illness she was deeply involved in her five childrens activities, especially those related to sports, dogs and horses. She was also active in Virginia Democratic Party matters and in The Fairfax County Historical Association. She and her husband have owned and operated for 38 years a beef cattle farm in the Shenandoah Valley. At the time of her death, she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manassas. Survivors include her husband, John K. Moriarty, of Manassas, five children, Kathleen Moriarty, of Washington, D.C., John K. Moriarty, Jr., of Reading, Pennsylvania, Annette Samsky and Julie Moriarty, both of Manassas and Marian Lewis, of Exton, Pennsylvania and 13 grandchildren.
